I've found great success with a 4-unit pike square, with rear units able to respond to flanking attacks on the forward units. I've learned that thinking of phalanxes as individual units is a fallacy. Another advantage is that I can deepend the formations to half the enemy's width, enableing a 2:1 ratio. Longevity + Less Men Killed Before Rout = More Damage. A phalanx 2-deep routs instantly, but a 12-deep holds for a long while.

Here's a list of what I know so far,įormations seem to heavily impact morale. My best is 312 kills out of 640 Spartans but I want feedback on how to improve.

My current test is a phalanx v phalanx battle against 8 Spartans on Very Hard (I test all units and tactics on Very Hard so that I know their effectiveness is not difficulty-dependent) using 8 Royal Macedonian Pikemen. I'm trying to figure out the best phalanx tactics.
